There is Only One Universal Law

Author: Djuan Yarbrough

With many religious viewpoints in our world, there comes various structures and things we consider as right or wrong. Our world is made of up of countless laws and rules that we follow. We can say that this is to keep our society in order or we can say that the need for all these laws are just to distract people from the truth. That truth being that there is only one Universal Rule.

The rule its self is simple “Do what you will but harm none”. This rule is the rule that all other rules derive from. I know this is something that other people have discussed and have come to the understanding of, but I want to give my views on this rule and why it’s something we should follow.

One of the major structure systems that we have as an option to follow is Christianity. For the most part, Christians follow the 10 Commandments. This encloses rules such as thou shall not murder, commit adultery, or steal. When we look at just these few, we see that they indeed follow our rule. The act of murder, adultery, and stealing aim to hurt someone. If we follow the Universal Rule, these things are avoided just the same way as they’d be avoided if we followed the 10 Commandments.

Actions such as murdering and stealing, are things that are not allowed by most Government systems throughout the world. These things will easily result in major consequences. Each action often has more than one rule to help make up the overall rule itself. If we follow our Universal Rule, then we again avoid these issues and take away a lot of the extra fluff.

Analyzing the Universal Rule, we can see many different arguments that can derive from its implementation. One of the major arguments is that we all view things differently and have different moral values. In this case, following one simple rule won’t be sufficient to keep our society within the confines of its current structure. This is a good argument but like with most arguments, there are holes in it. For starters, who says we must maintain this current structure of our society? Yes, it has been working for us for centuries but there eventually has to be an evolution, which I believe we will see soon. Also, why should we put so much doubt on our society and its potential to not require so much pampering? I know we have the ability to work in cohesion without the need for multiple rules and laws. By following one rule, we have a strong structure for our society and a positive outlook on the future. This system of course has a lot of elements that fall under anarchism, which is another topic for another time.

The point here is that if you look at all the components of the world that “require” rules, we can see that all the rules derive from this one rule. The problem is that although we have derivates of the Universal Rule, we have yet to place them in some of the areas that are crucial to not only our survival, but the survival of other living beings.

This is a topic that is often looked over but in reality, it is very important. There must be a balance in the world. Not just within our society, but the way we treat our planet and its other living components. Another topic for another time, but understand how this falls under the Universal Rule as well.
